This is an inspiring story of the miracles with hijama therapy.
N.A.H.T. has a male member that was involved in a car accident, and had to be hospitalized due to severe head injuries. The aftermath of the accident resulted in severe throbbing headaches with dizziness, visual disturbances, vomiting, etc. These headaches were attributed to the accident’s impact on his head. During his hospital stay, he was temporarily given oral painkillers and anti-migraine tablets, but they were ineffective. The medical specialist in charge of the hospital urgently requested a C.T scan to be carried out. The analysis of the C.T scan revealed a minor blood clot in the brain; the medical term for this is a subdural hematoma. As his condition was not fatal and did not require immediate surgery, he was put on specialized medication to control his symptoms. He was also placed on a waiting list for a few months for surgery to be performed.
During this waiting period, he decided to travel to the holy land (Mecca & Medina) for Umrah to get spiritual nourishment. Whilst his stay, he traveled to Medina where his friends recommended having his head cupped. After finding a well-known hijama specialist, he had hijama performed (wet-cupping) on his head several times over 4-weeks. Following this treatment regimen, he only had sporadic attacks however; they were minimized in severity.
He returned to the U.K. after spending 6 weeks in the holy land. During the initial week of his return, he noticed significant changes to his overall health that were linked to the hijama treatment (Blood-Cupping) for the head. There was a vast amelioration in the frequency of headaches and the accompanying symptoms as he felt they almost disappeared. The medical specialist discovered that there was almost no trace of the blood clot after another C.T scan and M.R.I. before his surgery. To the specialist this was quite astonishing; hence, they discharged him and gave him one follow-up appointment after 6 months for a confirmatory check-up.
Our colleague wondered how such a simple treatment could be so effective; miraculous and life-changing; at such a moment thoughts rushed through his mind as he wished to recommend it to many others. He firmly believed that cupping/hijama treatment saved him from the surgeon’s blade.
His mind was captivated by this whole scenario and he longed to pursue this wonderful therapy as a serious mission. He conducted an in-depth study with a group of like-minded individuals. This mission of his with us is now complete; collecting the gems of this science over time with the rest of the team makes all feel that we are now in a position where we can spread this beautiful sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w to others through literary work; revealing to all its wonders & great benefits.
“We pray to the Almighty Allah s.w.t; that this prophetic treatment known as hijama therapy becomes recognized and universally accepted at the government level of mainstream medicine and be recommended as a highly beneficial therapy in major hospitals and clinics of conventional and alternative medicine clinics under its uniquely given name “HIJAMA”.
Hijama/Al-Hijamah (Cupping Therapy): It is a Sunnah and a treatment of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The chinese popular treatment called acupuncture uses needles on different body parts called meridians. The points of their application parallel those of Al-Hijamah also known as Cupping therapy. Al-Hijamah is practiced in many countries as well as taught in many renowned medical universities & colleges with an accredited qualification. Hijama is derived from the Arabic root word “Hajam” meaning suction also known as cupping. In cupping/Hijama therapy, the aim is to remove stagnation/blockage from the bodily energy channels that are responsible for many ailments that we suffer from.
- Involves a form of scarification i.e. minor grazes on the skin.
- Removes a small amount of unhealthy blood from the patient.
- This process leads to the purification of blood hence it detoxifies the body.
- Hijama is known as bloodletting by others but the fundamental difference is that hijama involves the withdrawal of toxic blood from specific body points or regions/zones by suction. However, blood-letting-(Vennesection) involves removing blood from veins and arteries
- The process of bloodletting (venesection/fasd) involves taking blood from veins or arteries at random.
- Hijama is known to have multiple benefits to the complete human body functioning as it stimulates the body’s immune system and helps blood to flow more freely by removing the toxic components of the blood that we know exist in our blood from laboratory investigations.
According to the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there are certain places on the body that should have this treatment even if the individual is well, as a preventive medicine. There are also recommended times to use hijama and others when hijama should not be performed unless necessary. According to the sunnah it is recommended to perform Hijama on the 17th, 19th, and 21st of the Islamic lunar calendar. However, if it is absolutely emergency & necessary it is permissible to do it at any suitable time.
According to some schools of thought, it is not recommended to have hijama on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Wednesday. Also, according to the Sunnah, hijama should be done at the back of the neck, and between the two shoulder blades. This connects the brain to the rest of the body and brings oxygen into the brain and helps the body repair itself. This is also the place where toxins accumulate. Moreover, it strengthens the lymphatic system.
Hijama therapy is a unique & authentic therapy different in many ways from cupping which issued as a general term to describe it; having its own unique effects on our body with its operation in a systematic approach and based on the lunar calendar, so its classification as a therapy is also under a unique category when insured.
